21 January
The world's first supersonic passenger services are inaugurated. Concorde Super Sonic Transports (SSTs) of British Airways and Air France take-off simultaneously for Bahrain and Rio de Janeiro, while local residents complain about the noise.

24 May
Air France and British Airways begin transatlantic Concorde passenger services, from Paris and London to Washington Dulles International Airport.

29 July
The government announces that the production of the British Aircraft Corporation (BAC) 111 and Hawker Siddeley 146 airliners will be supported by loans.

10 September
A British Airways Trident jet and a Yugoslav McDonnell Douglas DC9 of Inex Adria collide in clear skies at 33,000 feet, killing 176 people in the worst ever mid air disaster.
